August 12, 2022 Jessica Stewart

You aren't required to be a die-hard sports enthusiast or loyal fan of professional tennis to know that the US Open (United States Open Tennis Championships) is an incredible showcase of talent. But you don’t have to watch from your couch or catch the highlights on your favorite sports show. This year, you should go and experience the longest-running tennis tournament in the world. The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center combines tournament play and a love of athleticism with dining, shopping, and entertainment, making it a venue “mecca for modern tennis fans.”

A Little US Open History

The US Open Tennis Championship was founded in 1881, and along with being the longest-running tennis tournament globally, it’s also the second oldest Grand Slam® tournament after Wimbledon. The initial site for this professional tennis tournament was in Newport, Rhode Island, but it moved to its current site, right here in New York City, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, in 1978.

For those who can’t attend in person, there are virtual events for US Open fans to experience and join in the excitement online. Online you can play games, join in on a daily scavenger hunt, live stream athlete practices, and shop for US Open merch.

Ways to Get to Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens

The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center as a venue is a sprawling stadium complex within Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The easiest way to navigate, if you’re already in New York City, is to use mass transit. It’s convenient and probably the most cost-effective way to get there.

The 7 train has service from the Grand Central Terminal over to Mets-Willets Point Station, which you also might find suitable. The Long Island Rail Road is also an easy transport with connections in Penn Station and for guests with disabilities.
