A Bit of History on The Westminster Kennel Club
The Westminster Kennel Club and its annual dog show have a long and unwavering history dating back to 1877. In that year, a group of sporting gentlemen who frequented the Westminster Hotel decided to host a dog show in Manhattan. What started as a friendly competition amongst friends quickly turned into the world’s greatest dog show.
The Westminster Kennel Club’s Dog Show positioned itself as the symbol of the purebred dog, and it became an annual staple in NYC and on televisions in homes across the country. It is the second-longest continuously-held sporting event in the country, second to only the Kentucky Derby.
The show pre-dates the lightbulb, the automobile, the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, and the establishment of the World Series. Undoubtedly, this world-renowned dog show has stood the test of time!

Nearly 3,000 dogs will attend the annual dog show for multiple ways to compete, including the confirmation competition for purebred dogs, the Master's Agility Championship, and the Master's Obedience Championship. There’s a jam-packed viewing schedule for event-goers and for those watching from home.
This year’s Westminster Dog Show will take place at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadow Corona Park, Flushing, NY, in Queens on May 11th, 13th - 14th, 2024. Doors open at 7:00 am each day.
