A bar/bat mitzvah is a very special occasion for Jewish families. It is a celebration of a child becoming an adult and it comes with a big party filled with friends and family. Planning a good bar/bat mitzvah is no easy task. There are a lot of moving parts and it takes organization and attention to detail. Hiring a planner is always a good move when it comes to planning a bar/mitzvah. One of the most important aspects of any bar/bat mitzvah is booking a great venue for your guests to enjoy. With that said, there are many individuals who overlook important parts of the venue that can greatly hurt your celebration. When booking a venue, you should always do an in-person tour so you can get a feel for the space and meet the staff face-to-face. Let’s take a look at what things you should look for when planning a bar/bar mitzvah.

1. Parking

Finding a venue with parking will make your bar/bat mitzvah extremely accessible for your guests. You have to consider the face that there will most certainly be young children as well as senior citizens who will be attending. Relying on public transportation and/or Ubers are doable, but it may be very difficult for some. When looking for a venue, you should put parking accommodations at the top of the list. Another thing to look for is valet parking services. This will give your guests an even more seamless experience at the bar/bat mitzvah.

2. Food/Beverage Services

It goes without saying that the food and drinks will be some of the most important parts of your bar/bat mitzvah. If you are planning on doing outside catering then you have to discuss that with your venue. They may or may not allow it. If your venue offers in-house catering then you are going to want to set up a tasting with the chef so you know what you are getting yourself into. Bring a friend so you can have two opinions. At the same time, you are going to want to make sure that they have a bar or multiple bars at the venue. Ask the venue owner about the staff and whether or not they can provide servers for your event.

3. Versatility

A great venue should be versatile so you can create your own vision for your event. A versatile venue means that you can organize the furniture, decorations, lights, and more to your liking. This is another reason why an in-person visit to the venue is so important. Talk to the venue owner and ask if you and/or your event planner can have input in the design of the venue for your event. It is a very special day, so it is important that your venue’s design meets your expectations.

4. A/V Capabilities

The audio & visual capabilities of your venue are extremely important. First and foremost, it is very important that you will have live entertainment such as a MC. An MC is very important for multiple reasons. They will help entertain your guests, provide information, and keep the night moving. You need to make sure that the venue has a good stage, and top-notch equipment so there are little to no glitches come the big day. At the same time, the lighting is very important so make sure that you ask about that when you do your on-site visit.

5. Dedicated Staff

Another good reason to do an on-site visit is to make sure that you get a feel for the staff of the venue. First and foremost you need to know that you could have a good relationship with the venue owner and/or manager. They are who you will be working with. Also, you need to make sure that you know that their team of servers, hosts, and bartenders are professional and hard working. Another good way to determine this is to research testimonials of the venue beforehand.

6. Children-friendly

As previously mentioned there are most definitely going to be children at your bar/bat mitzvah. Discuss this with the venue’s staff and make sure that the venue is child-friendly. A dance floor is a must when it comes to keeping kids entertained and you should also make sure that their menu has kid friendly options if you decide to do in-house catering.
