Celebrate Black History Month in NYC

Black History Month is a time to honor and celebrate those in the Black and African-American communities and their contributions to our society and culture. This uplifting and educational month commemorates the triumphs and struggles throughout Black history and how it connects to the world today. 

New York City joins the rest of the United States by celebrating this monumental month. A number of special events are happening all over the city, such as art exhibits, church services, walking tours, museum workshops, food tastings, and more! There are plenty of opportunities to learn more about Black historical figures and support your local Black artists and business owners in February and beyond. 

New York City Celebrates Black History Month With These Special Events

  • Harlem Chamber Players will present the 16th Annual Black History Month Celebration concert on Thursday, February 15th.
  • The Brooklyn Museum features The Black Future Festival, a week-long celebration with workshops, dance performances, storytelling, and more! Starting February 18th to 25th.
  • Check out Black-led Broadway Shows like Jelly’s Last Jam or MJ The Musical. Get your tickets today!
  • The Harlem Fine Arts Show celebrates 16 years of being the largest traveling art show that showcases up to 100 artists of African, Caribbean, and Black descent, happening from February 23rd to 25th.
  • Go on a walking tour of Harlem and check out the area’s historical landmarks with The Big Onion as they host Historic Harlem: Celebrating Black History Month.
  • It’s the perfect time to see a show at The Apollo, one of the city’s leading entertainment destinations. Amateur Night at the Apollo is back and returns on February 21st with a new lineup of performers.
  • Take a peek into the life of the famed musician Louis Armstrong by making a stop at The Louis Armstrong House Museum's special Black History Month tours, which are happening Thursdays - Saturdays all month long.
  • The New York Public Library is celebrating Black History Month in a big way with special events for all ages. Check out their extensive calendar for film series, workshops, storytimes, and more!
  • The Thelma Hill Performing Arts Center and Central Baptist Church join together for their second annual free Black History Month performance of music, dance, and spoken word happening on February 24th at 4 pm. 
  • Taste of Africa Popup Market is bringing the flavor to Brooklyn on February 25th. Try out some delicious local bites featuring the cuisine of the diaspora, with many restaurants participating.
