3 Mistakes Event Planners Should Never Make When Marketing an Event

April 5, 2022 Susan Serena

In this article, we’re going to review some of the major mistakes corporate event planners in NYC make when it comes to event marketing. A well-thought-out campaign is key to being able to sell event tickets and keeping your audience engaged throughout the entire event process. That means having their attention before, during, and after the event.

What are some of the most common event marketing mistakes Corporate Event Planners in NYC make?

  1. Not realizing it takes work. Yes, this one goes first and foremost. You are in for a rude awakening if you got into the events industry because you thought this world is all glitz and glam. There is a lot of detail, legwork, and get this….PLANNING! Corporate event planners in NYC don’t lead a 9-5 schedule so don’t expect to have a fixed agenda. The real glitz, glam, and fun comes from your grand finale. In the meantime, there are venue walkthroughs, tastings, etc. that all happen outside of normal business hours.

Now, in terms of marketing a NYC event, that’s a whole other to-do list. Posting your event with a ticketing company just isn’t enough. Over the years, we’ve heard about numerous ticketing companies whose websites say something like “sell out your event!” Or “sell out automation!” It’s all a gimmick.  It takes an excessive deal of work and devotion to actually sell out an event.

  1. Having a poorly designed website or event page. First impressions are everything when corporate event planners in NYC are trying to sell an event online. You must:
  • Pitch a great reason for your guests to want to attend your event.
  • Remember not to push the sale on them. Just list the key features, celebrities, guest speakers, etc. that will be in attendance. That will sell the event without too much effort on your part.
  • An alarming 70% of people who start to purchase an event ticket, back out. Why? Not enough event information, no FAQs, and no graphics or enticing content. You must include videos, images, and infographics that excite your target audience.
  1. Disregarding the calendar. It doesn’t matter if you’re planning a venue or online event, the calendar is crucial to your success and/or failure. It should be clear that you shouldn’t plan an event for a day which will be counterproductive to it. That means that no sane corporate event planner in NYC would schedule a business expo on Thanksgiving, Independence Day, or Christmas. Keep in mind, there are countless of other calendar dates that would conflict with major events. How about a a temperance convention in New Orleans during Mardi Gras? Or a Halal food festival in the middle of Ramadan? While we’re at it, why not try out a film premiere on Academy Awards night! Be mindful of the date and time of your event and research other events that may be detrimental to your goal.
