Oktoberfest is back in NYC from September 8th - October 29th, and there’s no shortage of events all over the city to celebrate this annual event. Every year, New Yorkers party like they’re in Munich by dressing in traditional Bavarian outfits, drinking authentic German beer, and finding all the best Oktoberfest events across the five boroughs. You won’t want to miss out on this month of food, drinks, and fun!
The History of Oktoberfest
In 1810, a royal wedding was cause for a large celebration in Munich, Germany. Prince Regent Ludwig of Bavaria, the later King Ludwig I, and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen were to be married on October 12th of that year. Andreas Michael Dall’Armi, Member of the Bavarian National Guard, had the idea of making this wedding a unique gathering by inviting the entire city to join the festivities with a large feast and a horse race. It was such a success that the people wanted more. An annual event was established, and Oktoberfest got its start.
Oktoberfest has evolved over the years, but the premise is still the same: the spirit of the festival and the gathering of the community. Today, Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, is the world’s largest folk festival, and it brings in around six million visitors annually. It is a celebration of German culture, traditional food, Bavarian music, and (of course) authentic beer.
