New York City might not be the first place you think of when celebrating Earth Day, but don’t underestimate this city when it comes to throwing Mother Earth a party! Don’t miss out on all the Earth Day festivities taking place all over the city! It’s a festive and educational day for everyone to enjoy.
The History of Earth Day
In early 1969, a massive oil spill occurred off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, devastating marine life and coastal ecosystems. This sparked outrage in the community and motivated public support for environmental conservation, which grew into a national movement. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin was inspired by the community outreach and joined forces with a young activist, Denis Hayes. Together, they promoted events and demonstrations all over the country and founded Earth Day on April 22, 1970. It was the dawn of the modern environmental movement and continues to be the largest secular day of protest in the world.
