About Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is a widely celebrated Mexican holiday that commemorates a historic battle. It was May 5th, 1862, when the Mexican army stood victorious over France at the Battle of Puebla. This holiday is sometimes called the Battle of Puebla Day. And nationwide, people enjoy celebrating this Mexican holiday with parades, costumes, festivals, parties, and amazing cultural fare.
Enjoy these fun facts about Cinco de Mayo!
- Mexican citizens don't call it "Cinco de Mayo." The official Mexican holiday is called El Día de la Batalla de Puebla, which translated means "The Day of the Battle of Puebla."
- The battle itself was pretty incredible. The Mexican army only had 2000 soldiers, all worn out and carrying outdated weapons. Yet they still defeated the French army of 6000.
- The first Cinco de Mayo celebration took place in California just a few weeks after the battle, where Latinos and Californians celebrated with parades and parties to commemorate the valiant Mexican army's victory.
